Organizing a move Did you know that May is National Moving Month? Each year, more than 21 million Americans move between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The average American moves once every seven years.

I’ve moved quite a few times and one thing I’ve learned is to start gearing up for your move as soon as you know you are moving.

The earlier you start, the more time you’ll have to make decisions about what to move and what to leave behind.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

* Purge first, then pack.

Grab a box of trash bags. Go through your home one room at a time with the goal of collecting those things that have been collecting dust for years. Throw away anything that’s unfixable, ugly or shabby. Bring the rest to your nearest thrift store or favorite charity.

* Take only your favorites.

As you go through your things, ask yourself: Do I use this? Do I love it? If the answer is no, let it go. Packing is a lot easier when you’ve got less stuff to pack.

* Think ahead.

As you pack, consider whether or not you will need a particular item where you are going. Will you be able to ride that mountain bike? Will all your furniture fit in your new home? Keep in mind that the fewer things you move, the less it costs to move them and the quicker it is to pack and unpack.

* Label boxes.

I always label each box with the room I want the box to go to in my new home. I also add a note about the contents. Example: Kitchen – Pots and pans or Master Bedroom – His dresser.

If you really want to ensure an organized move, check out the resource I recommend below in “Favorite Organizing Products and Resources.”

Goodbye winter, hello summer organizing tips Have you put away your winter clothing and accessories yet? If not, wait! This is the perfect opportunity to do a little uncluttering in your closet.

If you haven’t worn something this past season, how likely are you to wear it next year?

Use the Keep or Toss quiz on my Web site to help you decide what items to put away and what items to donate or sell at your next garage sale.

Shameless promotion: Simplify your life and expand your joy Would it be okay if you could simplify your life and expand your joy? And what if you could help others to do the same?

There’s an old saying that people will forget what you said, they’ll forget what you did, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.

You know how good it feels to go to your mailbox and you flip through the junk mail and bills and find a personal piece of mail?

I’m on a mission to help hundreds and thousands of people simplify their lives and expand their joy through an online program that lets you send real paper greeting cards and gifts to friends and family, clients and prospects right from your computer – in your own handwriting and with your own signature.

You hit SEND and your cards are printed, stuffed, sealed, stamped and mailed for a fraction of the cost of store-bought cards. You can even upload your own photos and create your own cards.

And get this: there’s a built-in opportunity to earn an extra paycheck each month when you recommend and refer others to this program. Watch the opportunity video at www.sendoutcards.com/kuper to learn more and while you’re there, send a card on me. It would make my day!

That’s all for this month. Until next month, keep it simple.
